coatdyke bowling club

The history of Coatdyke bowling club began at a general meeting of Stewarts & Lloyd’s welfare members in Clyde works on 10th January 1926.

A further meeting on 2nd January was held and a full committee was elected.

Mr John Steward was given the honour of being the first President of Coatdyke Bowling Club.

The bowling club was constructed, but a decision was made not to use the green during the 1926 season, the club however still operated and played in association competitions and friendly games with other clubs.

The green was officially opened on the 14th may 1927, with the first jack being delivered by Mrs Stewart the wife of the president who, it has been recorded, was presented with a silver jack to mark the occasion.

The club, officially registered with the S.B.A as S&L Coatdyke Bowling Club, quickly became well established, with membership increasing over the years from 54 ordinary members and 8 associated members to maintaining a membership around the 100 mark for many years.

Over the years the club has achieved successes both locally and nationally and under the auspices of Stewarts and Lloyds and then British steel, became well respected in the bowling fraternity and producing players who represented County and Country.

A. Mc Guinness was the clubs first international representative in 1948.  J. McCrae played for Lanarkshire County and Scotland during the 1950’s and in the 1970’s.

J. Paterson was a regular player for the Lanarkshire County team.

The Club progressed and prospered during this period, then in the 1980’s came a period of change, firstly the Ladies section was disbanded because of lack of welfare membership. The Clubhouse was destroyed by fire.  Fortunately accommodation and facilities were provided and erected by British Steel, which allowed the club to continue. Then in the early 1990’s because of the economic situation regarding the steel industry, the members of the club by negotiation and agreement with British Steel, secured a leasing agreement which gave the club members full control of the affairs and running of Coatdyke Bowling Club.

A new constitution was produced in line with the new situation and the club has successfully taken on the responsibility of being self-supporting and have through the efforts of club members, improved the facilities of both the premises and the green.

Hopefully a ladies section will become active again in the near future and Coatdyke Bowling Club will continue to make progress and prosper for another 75 years.
